'FROM COALFIELD TO COALFACE'
15 Nov 2009

NOTTINGHAM UNIVERSITY BUSINESS SCHOOL are delighted to be in receipt of a 3 Year ESRC/FME Fellowship and have recruited Mr John Colley

Professor Leigh Drake, Director of the School "thanks the FME for all its assistance in the context of establishing the ESRC/FME Fellow post in the Business School and would like to explore the possibility of a further Fellow in due course".

John Colley joins the ESRC/FME Fellowship Scheme after a very successful 30 year career working initially for British Coal in the Nottingham coalfield and then for the majority of his career in the construction product industries.

As an undergraduate, John studied mathematics and Psychology and gained additional qualifications as an accountant. In later years he returned to education to undertake a Master's degree in Operational Research, all valuable ingredients for general management and board membership roles with BPB plc, British Gypsum and more latterly the French conglomerate St-Gobain. His last role, before taking up his Fellowship, was as Managing Director for North and East Europe.

John has always maintained his educational interests and the undertaking of an MBA followed by a Doctoral programme at Nottingham convinced him that when a takeover of his last Company appeared inevitable, he should move into business school academia.

The ESRC/FME Fellowship has provided John with the ideal opportunity to embark on a new career opportunity. John brings a wealth of business experience to Nottingham University Business School and this has greatly assisted him to quickly gain peer acceptance, whilst learning to undertake serious research and teaching skills. This experience is well appreciated by his school, who continue to be more than satisfied with their ESRC/FME Fellow.
